The 2 Surprising Investing challenges Tech Employees have

I’ve been working in Tech for just under 10 years.

This means they make up a disproportionately large % of my social circle and money discussions.

Over the past couple of years, much of the financial frustration has come from 2 surprising challenges:

  1. They have too much Company Stock (aka RSUs granted to them by their employer).

  2. They have done a great job saving money but now feel they have” too much cash” (which isn’t earning much)

In both cases, the challenge is Concentration in one Asset (Stock and Cash).

The Solution is some kind of Diversification.

We know this.

But, we still can’t bring ourselves to do anything about it.

There’s many reasons for this:

  • Endowment Effect/Overvaluing what we have

  • Analysis Paralysis

  • FOMO

  • Too Busy

But, the truth is it’s because we don’t have a Strong & Clear Enough Why

If I had to (God forbid) pay for a medical emergency, I would sell ALL my stocks in a heartbeat.

No questions asked.

So, the first thing to answer is “What are your longer term goals ?”

Do you plan to buy a house by 2030 ?

Retire by 2050 ?

Everything else is details:
