3 Money Goals to set for 2025
3 Money Goals you can set for 2025
New year resolutions are pretty divisive. People love them or they hate them.
And, I get it.
Why do you have to wait for a new year to start new things ?
There’s no “logical” reason.
But, it just FEELS like the right time to evaluate, pat yourself on the back and maybe even give yourself a healthy reality check.
My first “Personal Finance Review” was at the tail end of 2019.
It was the first time I created a net worth statement (which I have since tracked monthly) and set Money Goals for the following year.
In many ways it was the official first step in getting my sh*t together financially.
If you’ve never set any money goals before or you’re looking for ideas,
Here are 3 powerful ideas.
I) Spend more on what makes you happy:
99% of finance advice focuses on saving and investing but very little is said about the art of spending guilt-free.
Spending isn't just about numbers.
There's a whole subjective, emotional side to it that's rarely discussed.
What SHOULD we be spending our money on?
Figuring this out gave me an improved sense of fulfillment by focusing on what matters
+ helped me drastically cut spending on the things that don't.
I finally understood what "Guilt Free Spending" meant.
My wife and I do the following:
1.What 5-10 things did we spend Money on in the past 12 months that we're still happy about ?
2.What did we actually spend our Money on ?
3.How do the 2 match ? Are we still spending on what matters to us ?
II) Build yourself a Security net:
There's a popular tip in personal finance: "Don't waste money on an emergency fund that covers more than 3 months' expenses."
The idea is simple – it takes 3 months (on average) to find a new job, so that's all the cash you need to cover the gap. Any extra should be invested for potential gains.
Maybe you just read this and thought “makes total sense”
Or, if you’re like me, 3 months worth of cash is not nearly enough.
If so, here are some questions to help you set an amount:
What does “monthly expense” actually mean ? Are you counting bare necessities or including discretionary expenses like going out ?
How much did you spend in the past year ? This is where “one off” expenses start to show up. When we think of expenses we think of rent, bills, groceries but there’s always a one off cost here and there that comes up
Are you insured ? Is your insurance linked to your employer ?
Are you in a country that offers unemployment benefits ?
Do you have dependents you might need to support (ex: parents) ?
Does this amount help you sleep at night? .
Could you end up with a much larger Emergency Fund than 3-Months ? Yes.
I’m personally fine with this but hey, I’m more paranoid than most.
Now, at some point, “building your Emergency Fund” becomes an excuse not to invest.
It’s comforting having a large pile of cash in the bank; and investing can be scary.
So…
III) Start investing:
Investing can be scary and of all the financial “resolutions”, the one most likely to be put off. If you’re subscribed to this newsletter, you’ve received the ETF Investing System which goes through my step by step process.
But, first make sure you:
Get Organized: determine what you can afford to lose: beyond your Emergency fund, you have cash you can’t afford to lose.
Maybe, you need it for taxes, a house deposit, and repaying loans. Adults have tons of obligations… whatever it is, this is money you need to keep safe.
Get Detailed:Why are you Investing ? What are your goals ? By when do you need to accomplish them ? What type of investor are you ?
Your situation is very different if you’re investing to have a nest egg for your retirement in 30 years VS you’re a 55 year old who wants to make sure you have enough cash flow to quit your job now.
